I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of

your letter No.3310/1916 of 12th ult., covering copy of a circular despatch from the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the question of "the possibility of substituting British for American motor vehicles in the Colonial markets":

With reference to paragraph 2 of your letter,

the Chamber has followed your suggestion and has obtained a

report from Kessrs. Alex. Ross & Co. (through Mr. A. S. D.

Cousland). The view therein expressed that the chief factor

against the use of English cars in the East generally is the

question of price is endorsed by Members of the Committee

-

of this Chamber who have knowledge of the subject:

I beg to enclose for your information three copies of Mr. Cousland's report together with three copies of the enclosure mentioned therein, which letter offers

criticisms of British cars from a motor engineer's point of view. It is hoped that these may be of value if conveyed, through the medium of the Colonial and Home Governments, to

British motor car manufacturers.

With regard to paragraph 3 of your letter, as to British heavy lorries and motor cycles successfully competing with American products, the Chamber desires to submit the following observations;-

HEAVY MOTOR VEHICLES: These have been in use

in the United Kingdom for many years now, on

motor bus services and for road haulage, and

the best type of vehicle has been gradually

evolved.
